What to do in case of an accident

Tooth Knocked Out

Place the tooth in water or milk. Time is critical so call the dentist immediately. If you can not locate your dentist go to the hospital emergency room. Depending on the reason for the tooth being lost, it is sometimes possible to replace the tooth back in the mouth and save it, but it must be replaced soon after being lost for this to happen.

Tooth Knocked Loose

If you were hit and a tooth was loosened call your dentist immediately. The tooth will most likely need to be stabilized by bonding it to the adjacent teeth. Most loosened teeth will tighten up. A tooth that has been injured may darken in color over time. A loosened tooth may abscess, even years later. If this occurs the tooth will need a root canal and possibly a crown.

Tooth Broken or Chipped Tooth

If you can, find the broken piece of tooth. Keep it moist. Call your dentist immediately. Depending on the degree of fracture the tooth can sometimes be repaired by reattaching the broken piece. The tooth may be repaired by bonding plastic to the tooth, or by placing a crown on the tooth.

If your lip or gums have been cut, apply pressure to the area to stop the bleeding. If the cut or bleeding is severe go to the hospital emergency room. The wound may require stitches and you may require antibiotic treatment.
