What is Bonding
Bonding is used to describe a number of
processes in dentistry that involve the use of dental adhesives to add
glass filled resin to the surface of a tooth.
Bonding is a fast, attractive, affordable procedure that can correct many
minor cosmetic problems. It can be used to fix small chips, lengthen a
tooth, cover a stain in a tooth, and eliminate gaps or spaces.
Procedure
Bonding
is often completed in one visit and many times can be done without
anesthetic or discomfort. The process involves cleaning and preparing the
tooth surface to receive the adhesive, applying a liquid adhesive, and
hardening this adhesive with a powerful light source. Various tooth colored
composite plastics are used to match the existing color of your tooth. The
composite plastic is applied and contoured into the proper shape and the
hardened with a strong light source. The composite plastic is then shaped
and polished.
How Long Will Bonding Last
Because the bonded glass resin is not as strong as your
natural tooth, it can chip or break. You can not put excess pressure on a
bonded resin such as chewing ice, eating popcorn kernels or hard candy. The
life of your bonded resin is directly related to the care you give it.
Normally a bonded resin will last from 5 to 8 years and even longer in
certain cases.
