As we age out teeth become more prone to cracking and breakage. When a tooth cracks, it is often painful as you put pressure against it on biting. The pain usually lasts only as long as you put pressure against it.

A tooth that has an old metal filling is usually more subject to cracking. The larger the filling the more likely the tooth is to crack.

To repair a cracked tooth, the tooth will often require an onlay or a crown. A new filling can not repair a cracked tooth.

If the tooth has cracked as a result of an accident contact the dentist as soon as possible.

It is important to repair a cracked tooth before it completely breaks completely. If the tooth fractures completely the tooth will often require a root canal before a crown is made. If the fracture is severe the tooth will have to be extracted.
