Examination
of your oral condition is done by the entire dental team. The oral
examination and x-rays are necessary to evaluate
and customize the particular treatment you might need. During your
examination a dental assistant gathers background information on your past
dental history and experiences. Your medical history is checked to see if
there might be a connection between what is happing in your mouth and your
general health. X-rays of your teeth and facial
bones are made and then read by your dentist.
A clinical dental examination will include:
- Periodontal examination
(gums and underlying bone structure)
- Mucous membrane
examination (lips cheeks, roof of the mouth and under the tongue)
- Occlusion or bite is
checked
- Missing teeth are noted
- The teeth are checked for
decay
- Broken or deteriorating
fillings are noted
- All dental appliances
(crowns, bridges, partial dentures or full dentures) are checked
- Oral cancer screening
examination
- Tempromandibular joint
(TMJ) and chewing muscles are checked.
After completing your examination, your dentist will discuss
with you the results of the examination and status of your oral health.
Your dentist will outline specific treatment for you depending on the
results of the examination, and will try to answer your specific questions
and concerns.
