Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in most all sources of water. Fluoride is effective in preventing and reversing the early stages of tooth decay. Fluoride makes the surface of the tooth stronger so that it resists the acids in plaque that cause tooth decay. Fluoride can re mineralize or strengthen tooth structure that has already been weakened by plaque, thereby reversing this early stage of tooth decay.

Fluoride is available in two forms: topical and systemic.

Topical fluorides include toothpastes, mouth rinses and professionally applied fluorides.

Systemic fluorides are those ingested into the body through water or dietary supplements.

Community water is the means by which most people get fluoride. Most major communities put fluoride in their water systems. Well water may or may not have fluoride in it. If you do not have fluoride in your water dietary supplements can be prescribed by your dentist.

The use of supplements should begin when the child is six months old and continue until all of the permanent teeth have erupted.

If your waters fluoride level is unknown, have your water tested (contact your local health department).
