A
dental implant is an artificial synthetic material that replaces the root
of a missing tooth. Once the implant and the bone have healed together
(this process takes a couple of months) a crown
is placed on implant. Implants can be used to replace a single tooth or
multiple teeth.
An implant can also be
used to help hold a denture in place when a person has lost all of their
teeth.
The process of placing an implant and restoring it with an
artificial tooth can take 6 to 9 months, although each patient heals
differently so times will vary.
The success rate of an implant depends on the purpose and location in the
mouth. The success rate for implants overall is about 95%. Your over all
health may affect the success of an implant. Diseases such as diabetes
reduce the chances for success. Poor oral hygiene is the biggest reason why
implants fail. Remember anything artificial in your mouth takes more care than
a natural tooth!

Implants are an alternative to a bridge
to replace a tooth. In this example a single missing front tooth is
replaced with an implant and a crown.
If you think you might be a candidate for an implant for a missing tooth,
or to help hold a denture, Contact your dentist
and ask for a consultation.
