What is a Mouthguard

A mouthguard is a flexible rubber like appliance that can be worn in athletic activities to protect the teeth from trauma.

A mouthguard can not only protect the teeth but also protects against more serious injury such as: jaw fractures, neck injuries and concussions.

When Should It Be Worn

A mouthguard should be worn anytime there is a chance of participants in an activity coming in contact with each other or hard surfaces. This includes activities such as football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, in line skating, martial arts, skateboarding.

Types of Mouthguards

Stock mouthguards, boil and bite type, can be found in most athletic stores. These offer some protection, but because of their bulkiness they may interfere with speech and breathing.

Custom mouthguards are made by your dentist. A mold of your teeth is made and a custom rubber appliance is made exactly to your bite. These offer the best tooth protection and cause less interference in breathing and speech. They are easy to use and care for.
