An onlay is a type of filling that is used to repair a tooth that has moderate to large decay or destruction. It is often used where a tooth as an old silver filling, but where no more silver can be added to the existing filling. Where filling requires healthy sound tooth to surround the filling material and hold it into the tooth, an onlay covers the damaged part of the tooth and is bonded into the tooth. This bonding is what holds the tooth and onlay together so even if the tooth had broken or had a previous large filling an onlay can restore it.

These pictures show 2 teeth with old unsightly silver fillings that are then restored with onlays. The result is a better appearance and stronger teeth!
