Modern dentistry has many new technologies to make diagnosis
and treatment more efficient and enhance patient comfort. Here are just
some of recent advances in technology.
Air
abrasion is used in some instances to prepare a decayed tooth to receive a
filling rather than the dental drill. It is a high pressure air that shoots
40 micron size particles against the tooth to remove decay. In many cases
this can be done without having to use an anesthetic. Although it can't be
used in all instances, it can best be used when decay is caught early and
is confined to a small area.
Adhesives have changed dentistry in many ways. They can be
used for fillings, bondings,
crowns, and veneers.
Adhesives have allowed dentists to repair and rebuild teeth stronger then
ever before. Rather than removing decay and filling the hole with an inert
filling material, adhesives glue the filling or restoration into the tooth.
This makes the tooth much stronger than a regular filling and makes the
tooth much less subject to breakage. Adhesives also allow dentists to make cosmetic enhancements to your smile.
Tiny
fiber optic cameras allow dentist to take vivid photographs inside your
mouth. It allows the dentist to show you exactly what the problem with your
tooth is. By greatly enlarging the tooth, small areas become easier to
diagnosis and treat.
OralCDx is a new brush biopsy system that allows dentists to
quickly and painlessly detect oral cancer in its earliest, most treatable
stage. A suspicious area is rubbed with a small brush to remove surface
cells and is then sent to laboratory for computer testing. It's a highly
reliable and painless test.
DIAGNOdent
is a new high tech laser system that aids in the diagnosis to cavities on
the chewing surfaces of teeth. It uses a laser light to see inside the
chewing surface to detect decay that neither the human eye nor an x-ray may
detect. By catching decay earlier it can be repaired before doing serious
damage to your tooth
The
Halimeter is a gas detection device that allows for computerized detection
of bad breath or halitosis. This device can
determine if you have chronic bad breath.
